Know Your Rights & Responsibilities!

Police have a broad range of powers. Get to know your rights and responsibilities when dealing with the police.

If you, your friends or your family come into contact with police, for your safety you should try to:

  • stay calm

  • be polite and cooperative

  • do not resist or be abusive or violent (eg push, shove, try to avoid/escape, hit or spit) – this could lead to additional charges or fines

  • if you do not know the rank of the police officer, call them 'Officer'

  • follow reasonable police instructions, like 'move back’

  • remember that there is no such thing as an ‘off the record’ conversation with police.

We acknowledge the diversity of First Nations cultures and communities and recognise First Nations Peoples as the traditional and ongoing custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and live. Our offices are located on the lands of the Gadigal people.
